Long over drinking Autumn and pumpkin beers for the year, I sought out some winter beers that didn’t have ‘Christmas’ marketing printed all over them. Amongst the candy-cane, mistletoe and pine tree-flavored brews, I discovered Saranac’s Caramel Porter, which seemed like a nice desert-y beer to try as the Coronavirus and cold weather forces us to stay indoors for a longer period of time.
What I found was a drink that missed it’s potential. The caramel taste is subtle, even absent ever other sip, like when you’re eating caramel ice cream but the caramel isn’t fully mixed in. And though, when concentrating hard enough, the joyous caramel taste did wash over the back of my tongue – assuming I wasn’t imagining it – I realized that I shouldn’t have to work so hard to taste caramel in a beer that’s literally called CARAMEL PORTER. I WANT THE FLAVOR TO PUNCH ME IN THE FACE.
I’ll finish this six-pack and move on to the next. Hopefully, I’ll find a gingerbread beer that actually tastes like gingerbread.
